MPI-CAC TechCon Chicago 2012

Earlier this month, Meetings Michigan traveled to Chicago to sponsor the 2nd Annual MPI-CAC TechCon 2012 Conference held at the Holiday Inn Mart Plaza on February 8th, 2012. We were joined by 6 of our partners: Marina Grand Resort, Discover Kalamazoo, Great Lakes Bay Region CVB, Westin at Detroit Metropolitan Airport and the Traverse City CVB.

During the General Session, all 7 of us went on stage in front of the 200 attendees to do a "Michigan Trivia" presentation. Similar to what we've done in years past at the CMP Boot Camp and MPI Mid-America, we did a PowerPoint Michigan Trivia presentation with Michigan Fun Facts. Numerous folks came up to us after the presentation to say how much they enjoyed seeing such a large, unified team promoting Michigan. They also enjoyed hearing unique fun facts instead of a traditional promotional presentation on hotel rooms, square footage, meeting space, etc.

Throughout the conference, we met with Chicago area meeting planners from various companies including Sara Lee, Avon Products and Abbott Nutritional Products. We also had the opportunity to listen to a very informative and engaging presentaion given by Richard Saul Wurman, Founder of TED Conferences.

Overall, it was a great show and we enjoyed the opportunity to support our friends at MPI-CAC!

Boosting Event Attendance by Rick Elamin

BOYNE Resorts, located in picturesque Northern Michigan, recently sat down with Rick Elamin, owner and event promoter of SinglesDetroit.net. Rick Elamin offers 3 ways to boost event attendance:

1. Use Social Media to promote and brand your Event - Social Media is the new way of communication for events. This promotion type is essential for a successful event. People must be aware of your event in order to attend. Besides traditional event promotion, social media offers new and effective ways to market your event. Especially the most famous networks like Facebook and Twitter can be a key to boost attendance. Social media is also critical in post-event recap. This includes photos, attendee feedback and testimonials.

2. Word-of-mouth marketing has been the single most effective tool for increasing attendance that I have seen. Instead of just sending out blast e-mails about an event (which you should still do) build a group of people that are responsible to invite people during the course of regular conversations. So, if you send an e-mail to a friend that might benefit from attending ask if they are going to be at the event and let them know that you are going to be there. Creating incentive for people to spread the word to others can prove beneficial.

3. There is no doubt that the right venue can compliment an event, but it can also play a big part in making the event a success. The right venue will portray your company in the right light and making the event even more appealing. Michie's Adventures at Soaring Eagle Casino

Hi, it’s me Michie the Fishie again! I want to tell you about my trip to the Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort. My trip to Mt. Pleasant went swimmingly. I couldn’t believe how impressive this place looked when I pulled up.

It’s a big property. They have 514 guest rooms and suites and over 70,000 square feet of meeting space. Plus the resort is connected to one of the largest casinos in the state!

The resort has a lot of things to do and choose from. They have a full service spa, exercise room, beauty salon, indoor pool, outdoor Jacuzzi, three restaurants, a deli a couple lounges and also National Headliner Entertainment! They’ve had people like Bill Cosby, Betty White, Tony Bennett, Rascal Flatts, even Toby Keith and the band Chicago!

I wonder if Hootie and the Blowfish are coming here any time soon.

I decided to pass some time in the indoor heated pool. The pool is unique in that it has an underwater sound system. Coming from someone that spends an awful lot of time underwater, I really appreciate that feature. The pool attendant literally had to fish me out of the pool so that I wouldn’t be late for my spa appointment.

Ahhhh, there’s nothing like unwinding in the spa with a nice Seaweed Facial to get you ready for a night full of fun.

After my facial, Adam, one of the friendly Bellmen at the resort took me and my luggage up to my room.

He had the nerve to tell me that he thought I overpacked, but I don’t think you can ever be too prepared.

Holy Mackerel! What a nice room!!

I’ve got a room with a beautiful king size bed and my own personal Jacuzzi! A fish can get used to accommodations like this!

I can’t believe it! My room actually has a piano in it!

They must save rooms like this for the big fish they get staying here! You know what they say…you can tune a piano but you can’t tuna fish!! Heehee that’s a little fish humor…

I decided to go check out the restaurants to get a bite to eat. On my way to the restaurants I stopped to enjoy this beautiful Poinsettia Tree in the Grand Foyer.

I couldn’t help but think that this would be a great place to have a holiday party, I’m sure the staff would make your planning so easy that it wouldn’t make you crabby.

So now off to dinner, I thought I’d go to the Firefly Buffet and enjoy a nice leisurely meal until I noticed this sign….

AAAACK!!! Seafoood Extravaganza?!! Nobody warned me about that! I’m going to the steakhouse instead!

Ok, the Siniikaung Steakhouse looks like a better choice for me. What a nice menu…steaks, chops, vegetarian, a nice wine list to choose from and wait a minute…grilled Salmon??!! Eeeek! I’m getting out of here and ordering room service!

I got a call from a friend of mine who invited me to meet them for a nightcap in the Talon Night Club. I didn’t feel like a fish out of water.

What a great experience I had at the Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort. I really got schooled on how much there is to do and see there. Michie's Grand Experience on Mackinac Island

After a quick swim across the Straits of Mackinac I arrived on Mackinac Island for my overnight at Grand Hotel. Jeff and his beautiful horse drawn carriage picked me up and brought me right to the red-carpeted front porch steps of Grand Hotel. Not that I couldn’t have swam the short ½ mile from the dock, but it sure was nice to get a ride. Here on Mackinac there are no cars, you have to walk, ride bike, take a carriage, or in my case, swim to where you want to go.

At the front steps “Doorman Extraordinaire” Dondi greeted me and we chatted for a few minutes after he helped me depart my carriage. I quickly realized that Dondi is the man to see when you need a ride from the hotel to anywhere on the island.

Dondi told me of the many things I must see and do while at Grand Hotel, beginning with going to the very top of the hotel and visiting the Cupola Bar. It was amazing, with its 180 degree view of the Straits and the Mackinac Bridge, and don’t even get me started on the delicious beverages.

Next I went to the Grand Luncheon Buffet. Talk about delicious! I did not know where to begin, so, I started in the logical place, the dessert section. With cheesecake, and carrot cake, and cookies, and pastries, and bread pudding, and…Oh, I could go on forever.

Oh look, there is Annie Farrell peeking through the glass of the cold foods section of the buffet. Annie is Grand Hotel’s Director of Sales, she and the convention staff put together “Grand Events” big and small. Just this season, the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce and Republican Leadership Conferences were both held at Grand Hotel. I actually swam on stage at the podium where the future president of the United States could have been standing. How exciting!

After eating lunch and checking out the Theatre, I decided to let my lunch settle and get a bit of exercise by taking a trip around the labyrinth located down by the pool. What a great way to work off a few extra bites of cheesecake.

Now that I was out moving I decided to get in some free croquet and a little practice on the putting green.

After all that activity I was ready to relax and take in the view, so I headed to the Worlds Longest Front Porch and took a seat in one of the 100 wicker rockers. Check out that view, you cannot help but relax here.

After a little R&R on the porch I figured I had better get up to my room and get ready for dinner. (I know, it seems like I just ate lunch doesn’t it?) I decided to stop by and check out the Terrace Room. This room is used for nightly live music and dancing with Alex Graham and the Grand Hotel Orchestra. During the day it is generally in use for meetings and fun things like wine tastings.

Next stop, my guest room. I had so much fun jumping from bed to bed…oh, don’t tell anyone at the hotel I said that. It was difficult to leave those comfy beds and go down to dinner. But I did make it to dinner, and once again made a puffer fish out of myself indulging the gourmet 5-course dinner that comes with most room rates.

My stay at Grand Hotel was so enjoyable, I hope to have a chance to return during their 2012 season and experience one of their weekend packages like Titanic, Somewhere In Time, or maybe 4^th of July. What fun that would be!

Michie The Fish Goes Great Lakes Bay!

The Great Lakes Bay Region was easy to find after a short swim from Mount Pleasant! Luckily, my friends Wendy & Sonja invited my famous friend Nemo to join me for my Great Lakes Bay Getaway in Bay City, Birch Run, Chesaning, Frankenmuth, Midland, and Saginaw. It’s time to GO GREAT LAKES BAY!

They weren’t kidding when they told us the portions are HUGE at Tony’s I-75 Restaurant in Birch Run! I think we’d better split this sundae and save room for all the other great dining in the Great Lakes Bay Region. From Frankenmuth’s World Famous Family-Style Chicken Dinners to Bay City’s unique stops like Fusion 1 Café and Saginaw’s Jake’s Old City Grill, you’ll never leave the Great Lakes Bay Region hungry!

After eating that giant ice cream sundae at Tony’s, I figured I better have a look in the mirror… I didn’t know I’d be getting a whole MAZE full of them! Nemo and I had a blast exploring Frankenmuth River Place’s Ultimate Mirror Maze, with over 2,000 square feet of mirrors, endless hallways, and dead ends.

Nemo and I thought we were too stuffed to ever eat again after our giant Tony’s sundae, but then we spotted the perfect place for some afternoon refreshments… the KingFish Restaurant & Tiki Lounge on the scenic Bay City riverfront! We got to sit back and unwind at “Dockside,” the Restaurant’s four-level patio deck overlooking the historic Saginaw River! With seating for over 200+ and a dock for over a dozen boats, KingFish is the perfect place to meet, celebrate, or just dine and unwind while watching a beautiful sunset!

After a great treat at KingFish, Nemo and I were swimming in great finds at the Bay Antique Center! Did you know that the Bay Antique Center is Michigan’s largest and finest antique mart? We saw why, as we browsed antiques and treasures from over 100 quality dealers, all at one location!

Following our shopping spree at the Bay Antique Center, it was time to get out and enjoy the fresh air! Wendy and Sonja took us on a tour of all the Great Lakes Bay Region’s lush golf courses. They pointed out the region’s four championship courses—Apple Mountain (Freeland), The Fortress (Frankenmuth), The Sawmill (Saginaw), and Bay Valley Resort (Bay City). We also learned about the incredible new Mix & Match custom golf packages you can create only in Michigan’s Great Lakes Bay! Simply choose your courses and your favorite place to stay, and they’ll build you a personalized package at an unbelievable rate!

We felt right at home when we visited the Children’s Zoo at Celebration Square in Saginaw! Right away, we hitched a ride in a friend’s wagon and got to tour the entire zoo. We saw llamas, alligators, peacocks, kangaroos and monkeys… and we were just lucky enough to catch the incredible exhibit of black-footed penguins without becoming lunch! After all, this wasn’t just any zoo—it’s one of only five AZA-Accredited Zoos in all of Michigan!

After all the excitement at the zoo, it was time to unwind and channel our creativity, so we stopped by Space Studios, an incredible art gallery and studio in Midland. Here, we got to browse some great artwork, and even get our fins a little dirty! Did you know you’re able to learn to throw your very own pottery, and even glaze and paint it yourself? Talk about dipping your fins into some fun!

All of that spinning on the pottery wheel made us a little dizzy (and a little hungry!), so Nemo and I decided to swing by St. Laurent Brothers to see what special batches of candies and nuts they were stirring up that day. Between the saltwater taffy, specialty roasted nuts, and all of the other goodies, we definitely saw why this is a favorite stop for all ages!

Wendy & Sonja sure knew how to wrap up this tour with a relaxing, rejuvenating candlelit massage at Serendipity Day Spa in Frankenmuth River Place. After seeing all of the amazing sights, savoring the flavors, and enjoying the excitement of Michigan’s Great Lakes Bay Region, anyone would need some R & R!

Michie Takes Mt. Pleasant!

I woke up on this bright, sunny, August day with the smell of Comfort Inn and Suites Hotel and Conference Center’s continental breakfast wafting in my room. I came to stay here last night because I heard it has one of the best conference facilities around, so I had to check it out for myself. The Comfort Inn and Suites Hotel and Conference Center did not let me down. This facility has 138 guest rooms and 8 meeting rooms with a capacity of 600 so it can host any sort of event I want to put on. There is also a Bennigan’s on site for me and my friends to swim to for some delicious food and drinks, not mention the fitness center, pool, high speed internet and free local calls available to me. After enjoying breakfast, I am heading to the Ziibiwing Center to learn about this area’s Indian history.

Mmmm… I’m full. That breakfast was delicious. Next, I am off to the Ziibiwing Cultural Center on the Isabella Indian Reservation of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe. Mount Pleasant is rich in American Indian culture because of the 130,000 acres of reservation land sprawling through Isabella County. The word “Ziibiwing” means place by the river in the tribe’s original language, Anishinabemowin, which makes the Ziibiwing Center the perfect place for me since I live in the water! This language is used throughout the center, as well as in printed materials. At the Ziibiwing Center, there is so much to see! There are permanent exhibits and temporary exhibits that change throughout the year.

The Ziibiwing Center’s permanent exhibit is called “Diba Jimooyung” which means “telling our story”. This 15 area exhibit teaches guests about the struggles to hold on to the land, language and life ways of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe. I feel like I know all about the American Indian culture of this area now!

The Ziibiwing Center also has meeting and conference facilities for holding events. Located right by the Soaring Eagle Casino, this location will make any event unique.

On my way out, I think I will stop in the gift shop to get some souvenirs to take home for my friends! Maybe I will get some dream catchers or American Indian art work.I can’t decide what to buy; there are too many options!

After learning all about the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe at the Ziibiwing Center, I am going to head down the road to try my luck at the Soaring Eagle Casino. The casino offers table games, poker, bingo, keno, and slots as well as a variety of dining options. I think I am going to check out the nickel slots. I have a lot more places to visit in Mount Pleasant so I don’t want to spend all of my money in one spot! Wish me luck; I am hoping for a big win! Keep your fins crossed!

Well, now I am downtown where all the shops are. I’m so lucky to be here at this time because the Street Festival is happening right now! There are booths everywhere from local vendors, a ton of food, and some great entertainment! There will be dance exhibitions later; I hope I am here long enough to see them. Right now, I am heading over to check out this sand castle that is being constructed in Town Center. The city brought in professional sand sculptors that are taking the whole week to build this. Mt. Pleasant must have known Michie was on her way; they wanted to make me feel right at home among all the sand!

Good thing I didn’t spend all my money at the casino so I can do some shopping and eating in downtown Mount Pleasant. Let’s head down Broadway street, right past the Mount Pleasant Area CVB office at 200 E. Broadway! The building where the CVB office stands now was one of the earliest bank buildings to be constructed in Mount Pleasant. Starting as The First National Bank of Mount Pleasant, it changed its name to Isabella County State Bank in the 1890s. After it was a bank building for over a century, it became what is now the CVB, Chamber of Commerce, and Middle Michigan Development Company offices.

The word around here is that there are some great local restaurants I should check out for lunch. Gambling at the casino and visiting the Ziibiwing Center has made me work up an appetite! I am deciding whether to eat at The Brass Café or Max and Emily’s Eatery, both being locally owned restaurants. Residents have told me The Brass Café has an excellent selection of seasonal ingredients on their menu and is a great place to grab lunch or dinner for any occasion: cocktails, a night on the town, or a business meeting, for instance. Max and Emily’s is also locally owned and has an extensive menu offering baked goods, soups, salads, and sandwiches. At Max and Emily’s, you can order in or take it to go. Although I have heard wonderful things about both places, I think I’m going to get something from Max and Emily’s. That way, I can take my lunch with me. After all, I have a lot more to do here and my stay is limited!

While in Mount Pleasant, I can’t forget to check out the campus of Central Michigan University! Approximately 25,000 students attend CMU on a yearly basis. The school sure has grown from when it was Mount Pleasant Normal and Business Institute in the 1890s. My friends at the CVB, Chris Rowley and Matt Young, are CMU graduates themselves! Fire up Chips!

While on campus, I have to check out Kelly Shorts Stadium where the CMU Chippewas play football. I might have to come back and watch the team play when the season kicks off.

I have also heard about the new CMU Event Center that was completed in 2011, McGuirk Arena. The event center seats 5,300 people and was designed to provide an engaging environment for commencement, athletic events, concerts, trade shows and more. In 2011, CMU held its first graduation ceremony there, as well as hosted pop artist, Kesha! I’m bummed I missed that!

The campus of CMU was amazing. Next, I’m going to go check out the Chippewa River and hopefully soak up the sun on this gorgeous day. The river serves as popular recreation activities for Mount Pleasant residents, college students, and visitors. On the Chippewa River, you can canoe, kayak, fish and tube. Right now, am I relaxing in front of the water fall at Nelson Park. The Chippewa River runs right through Nelson Park; maybe I will pass it on my excursion later! Being a fish, I think I will just relax and let the river carry me away instead of fishing. That doesn’t sound too exciting to me!

I feel so relaxed and tanned after that little trip down the Chippewa. I’m off to meet up with my friend Matt Young, who works at the CVB. He is going to tell me all about Michigan’s Central Swing. It is a golf program run through the Mount Pleasant Area CVB. You choose where to stay and where to play and Matt does the rest! Sounds like a stress free way to plan a get away to me! I’m making my way down Pickard Street, one of the main roads that runs through Mount Pleasant and where a lot of businesses are located! I just passed Doozie’s Ice Cream; I will definitely be heading there later.

After a short tour down Pickard Street, I made it here to Bucks Run, one of the courses that participates in the Michigan’s Central Swing program. The program features 12 courses of high caliber, picturesque golf, all within convenient driving distance in Central Michigan. Guests can chose from one of the outstanding accommodations here in Mount Pleasant and create the perfect little golf getaway. Bucks Run is one of the four premier courses that the program offers and has a 4.5 star rating. Maybe if I am nice to Matt he will take me to see some of the other golf courses, such as Tullymore, St. Ive’s or Pohl Cat, next time I am in Mount Pleasant!

Time to wind down from the long and exciting day with dinner and a drink or two. Ever since I got here people won’t stop raving about this restaurant called Mountain Town, so I can’t leave Mount Pleasant without stopping there. This brewery and steakhouse now sits on the location where the historic Mount Pleasant Railroad Depot used to be. The restaurant is a far cry from the original look of the railroad depot, but still has its original feel. I’m going to have to try a rack of their award winning ribs just to see if there as good as everyone says they are. Ribs will be a nice treat and a stray from the normal fishy diet of sea weed! I’ll take one of their hand crafted beers to go along with it – the Chip River Weizen sounds delicious!

Mountain Town definitely lived up to their reputation. I am stuffed! Well, not quite. Doozie’s ice cream will top me off. Doozie’s is a local hot spot. It is a little outdoor ice cream parlor right off one of the main roads, Pickard. They have an extensive menu ranging from a long list of Arctic Swirl flavors, to sundaes and shakes. They even offer lighter versions that are just as delicious – Dole Whip or Skinny Dip for the more calorie conscious people. Peanut Butter Cup Arctic Swirl with chocolate ice cream for me – yum! The lines may be long, but trust me, it’s worth the wait!

After a long, fulfilling day in Mount Pleasant, I think I have seen it all for this trip. Mount Pleasant Wow is right; there is so much to do here in Central Michigan. When I go back to my school of fish friends, I will have a lot to tell them about this exciting destination to convince them to come back with me and see more! I am going to go pass out in my soft, plush bed at Comfort Inn and Suites Hotel and Conference Center! See you at my next stop!

Michie Explores Ann Arbor!

Michie attended a reception for our Japanese micro site dignitaries at the METAL. Eclectic art pieces, blacksmithing and state-of-the art metal cutting took his breath away.

Be aware that the Fairy Doors of Ann Arbor may or may not be there at any given time. They have been appearing in Ann Arbor since 2005. Michie found this one at the Selo-Shevel Gallery. It’s a mystery. Some are exterior, some are interior, some are BOTH!!!

Another Urban Fairy Door. Michie searched high and low at Sweetwaters Café, Peaceable Kingdom, The Ark and finally found one at Jefferson Market and Cakery. When he went back the next day it was gone.

While Michie was searching for Fairy Doors he headed over to the Kerrytown District, home of the Ann Arbor Farmers Market. Crafts, furniture, baked goods, pottery, fresh flowers…he could not believe his luck.

Michie nestled into the fresh eggplants, green peppers and tomatoes at the Farmers Market. How can he get those sunflowers home???

He better be careful or he will get sold with the basket of green beans. So much to see and do at the Farmers Market but he better move on.

Michie headed right into the Kerrytown Market and Shops. Fine shopping, dining, unique antiques, exotic spices and low and behold, exquisite papers at Hollanders. He made himself at home in the bookbinding workshop.

Historic Kerrytown’s Hollanders specializes in unique decorative papers and hand bookbinding supplies. The colors and designs at Hollanders were as bright and beautiful as his.

Michie loved this year’s Ann Arbor Art Fair. Four award-winning juried art fairs transformed Ann Arbor into an outdoor art gallery. Michie jumped on board this piece of art. Wait, is this guy real or not?????

Michie saw the best in fine art and fine crafts during his adventures. He is going to try to blend in here and get some rest.

Michie Visits Zehnder's of Frankenmuth!

I started the trip off by checking into Zehnder's Splash Village Hotel and Waterpark, the largest indoor waterpark in Frankenmuth, right next to Bronner's Christmas Wonderland in downtown Frankenmuth.

Once I got all settled in, I kicked back and relaxed while watching some TV in the beautiful Family Suite. My room came complete with a fireplace, a sitting room, two queen beds and 6 complimentary waterpark passes. Time to check out the waterpark!

Here I am floating on the Lazy River with the lifeguard. I also enjoyed the Splash Landing Play area, Dumping Bucket, Giggling Gorge and 4-story tube slides. It was so much fun and I felt so at home!

It's right around dinner time, so I called the Front Desk and made a reservation at one of my favorite restaurants, Zehnder's Restaurant just down the street.

After a delicious chicken dinner, I decided to stroll downstairs to Zehnder's Bakery and Foodstore to check out all of the goodies. There were so many delicious treats and unique gifts to choose from and the staff was swimmingly helpful!

I perused a recipe out of Chef John Zehnder's Cookbook, From Grandma With Love and just had to purchase it so I can eat Zehnder's at home. You can also take Zehnder's home with you by visiting Zehnder's online store at Zehnder's online store.

After a fun day of shopping and dining, I caught up with Drumstick and my friend, Mini Drumstick outside the restaurant and we got a picture in front of Zehnder's famous neon sign which celebrates its 75th birthday this year!

Just one more stop to fully enjoy the Zehnder's experience: golfing at The Fortress! So I stopped by to brush up on my putting skills with Fortress golf member, Justin.

I had so much fun at Zehnder's between splashing around at Zehnder's Splash Village, enjoying my famous family style chicken dinner at Zehnder's Restaurant, shopping at Zehnder's Marketplace and golfing at The Fortress! The H Hotel Welcomes Michie!

Ahoy, friends! I’ve just arrived at the H Hotel on Main Street in downtown Midland … check me out at their Main Entrance! Looks like a beautiful day to me!

Here I am with some friendly folks at the Midland Farmer’s Market – which happens every Wednesday and Saturday from 7:00 am to 12:00 pm … it’s also home to some of the freshest, delicious, and home-grown goods around! Did I mention it’s within sight (and walking distance) from the H Hotel? There sure is a lot happening in Downtown Midland this summer!

Look at me, look at me! I’m just about to get on the “Tridge” – the world’s only 3-legged pedestrian walking bridge! This bridge, also located within sight of and within steps of the H Hotel, connects the shores of 3 rivers – Saginaw, Chippewassee, and Tittabawassee.

Here I am again – at the ‘center’ of the Tridge and over-looking the Chippewassee River! By goly, it’s gorgeous up here!

I met this fine fellow, “Geoff Miles Stone” (he’s pretty handsome, huh?), who stands (and welcomes guests) at the H Hotel’s Main Street/Courtyard entrance … he’s part of downtown Midland’s 2011 Summer Sculpture Series! There are 18 different troll sculptures (by local artists) situated around downtown and are so unique, you can’t miss ‘em!

Ah … a cocktail party at it’s finest! Lucky for me, I was visiting when the H Hotel served as host of the Regional Chamber of Commerce’s (Midland, Bay City, Saginaw, and Mt. Pleasant) hosted a ‘Business After Hours’ networking event! Over 1,200 business folks were at this event … did you know the H is deemed the Great Lakes Bay Region’s premier venue for special events, meetings, and even weddings?

Here I am on the Café Zinc Main Street patio – outdoor dining at it’s finest! Café Zinc is a French-bistro type restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner – they also feature fresh made pastries and specialty coffees and is quickly coming Midland’s ‘hot spot’ for dining out-The Great Lakes Bay Regional Lifestyle Magazine voted Café Zinc the best place to dine outdoors, best place for a business lunch, and best croissant!

Michie Dives into Greater Lansing!

No trip to Greater Lansing is complete without a stop at the State Capitol Building, so that’s where I decided to launch my big visit! The artistic beauty and historical significance of this building was just awesome.

After my tour of the Capitol Building, I took a stroll through Washington Square and downtown Lansing. Wow! So many restaurants, shops and night spots from which to choose! I really got a cool and lively vibe downtown and knew for sure I’d be back for some fun later tonight.

I’m a fish, and heights are SO not my thing… but when I heard about the event in downtown Lansing called “Over the Edge”; I just HAD to get involved. Rappelling down the side of the 23-story Boji Tower for charity? Absolutely! This nice young lady let me ride down with her and we raised $500 for Team Lansing Foundation. I may not look nervous, but I was pretty much freaking out.

I had heard a lot about all the automotive history in Greater Lansing, so I had to check out the R.E. Olds Museum. Just so cool! I mean it – this is American innovation at its best. Although General Motors doesn’t make Oldsmobile anymore, the Lansing Delta Township GM Plant is absolutely state-of-the-art and provides the world with Cadillacs. I entered a drawing to win this 70’s era Olds Cutlass. Wish me luck!

Whew! I’m always looking for places to take a dip when I get into a new town. I mean, I like to get around and do things, but at the end of the day, I’m just a fish out of water. I had a great time chatting with these kayakers going down the Grand River. Feeling cool, refreshed and ready for some serious cardio, I swam upstream all the way from downtown Lansing to the Red Cedar River in East Lansing and the campus of Michigan State – Gorgeous!

After my swim, I had to check out Michigan State University. What a happening and beautiful place it is, too! I did some shopping, got a little ice cream and took in the scenic campus. I’ve literally never seen anything like it. You wouldn’t believe how surprised I was when I ran into MSU’s mascot, Sparty and a nice student from the School of Hospitality Business. This picture is a total keeper!

Seeing Sparty got me thinking about sports. I know that when it comes to summer in Greater Lansing, everyone is going nuts – for the Lansing Lugnuts that is! I hustled back downtown and met up with some friends from the Greater Lansing CVB. We had an awesome view of the game from suite level of the Lugnuts stadium, now called Cooley Law School Stadium. What a great game and a great time. I caught a foul ball, ate about 7 hot dogs and watched the Lugnuts pull off a fantastic win!

While at the game, I met a man who told me he was a CTA. I wasn’t familiar, so he told me all about the Greater Lansing Certified Tourism Ambassadors. He was just one of hundreds of local residents that have taken a course offered by the Greater Lansing CVB, which educates area residents about all there is to see and do in Michigan’s Capital City area! What a great idea, and as a newbie to the region, I really appreciated his insight. He even took the time to walk me through the steps to download the Greater Lansing Mobile App to my smartphone. Suddenly, I had maps and all kinds of information right there in my fin. Thanks to the Greater Lansing Tourism Ambassador, I’m now all about Lansing and the Greater Lansing Mobile App!

Armed with the Greater Lansing Mobile App on my iPhone, I took to the streets after the Lugnuts game and found all kinds of walkable dining and nightlife. It was so nice out, I decided some outdoor dining and drinks would be just the thing. After seeing there wasn’t too much fish on the menu, I chose a hip place downtown called Tavern on the Square known for tapas dining. What that means is you get little plates of food to sample and share with friends. Even though I showed up alone, I soon met a bunch of friendly people and we ended up sharing some great food and drink.

Turns out the people I met at Tavern on the Square had plans after dinner, and wouldn’t you know it… they were so nice, they invited me to come along. At first, I said I was too tired. I mean, just today I had already toured the Capitol, strolled through downtown, rappelled down a skyscraper, checked out some cool classic cars, swam in the State’s longest river, met Sparty, tore it up at a Lugnuts game, and now just had more great food and drink at this cool place, Tavern on the Square! I was beat, you know?! Well, they were persuasive… and when they wagged a free ticket to the Common Ground Music Festival in front of me, I rose to the occasion. I was going to totally maximize my visit in Greater Lansing and not wimp out! So I pounded an energy drink and ten minutes later, I was crowd surfing with thousands of my new best friends at the Stone Temple Pilots show!

Thanks Greater Lansing! You sure know how to show a fish an amazing time - I’ll never forget it!

Michie Discovers Kalamazoo!

My stay in Kalamazoo started off on the fast track! At the Kalamazoo Valley Museum, I did laps on the race track and blew away my competition! I then headed off to the other fantastic exhibits this hands-on museum had to offer!

I tried my hand-or should I say fin- at the banjo. Turns out I’m rather good! Maybe I’ll take this act on the road…

I then made my way over to the Mummy’s tomb! She wasn’t very talkative but I did find out a lot about her past!

After the museum I decided to make my way over to Nature Connection of Kalamazoo, a local novelty shop. I found out a lot of neat things about our wonderful state and even got a chance to take a dip in their pond!

At Wild Bull Saloon and Steak Pit, I held on for dear life as I took my chances on the mechanical bull!

A piano man I am not, but that didn’t stop me from dropping by Monaco Bay for their dueling piano shows!

At Tempo Vino Winery I enjoyed a class of their signature wine, ‘I’ve Got a Gal in Kalamazoo’-wish the Missus was here to enjoy it with me! The wines here are hand crafted in small batches from grapes grown all over the world!

I really worked up an appetite after all this sight seeing so I decided to head on over to Zazios for some yummy Italian cuisine. I felt like I was part of a live cooking TV show at the Chef’s Table! I got a 5 course meal cooked up right in front of me!

After a long day, I decided to kick back with a bottle of Oberon at Bell’s Brewery. This classic summer beer goes great with a slice of orange! Pick up your own case of Oberon or try one of the other fantastic beers brewed right here in Kalamazoo!

Michie Experiences The Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park

After visiting Detroit, I traveled west to visit Grand Rapids, a beautiful city with historic architecture, delicious restaurants and lots of culture.

The highlight of my trip was Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, an open-air museum featuring hundreds of internationally acclaimed works of art.

After admiring the tulips and daffodils, I headed inside to see one of Meijer Gardens’ most popular exhibitions, Butterflies Are Blooming. I saw more than 40 different species of tropical butterflies and even native Michigan caterpillars!

The 132-acre facility is huge and there’s so much see! Out in the Sculpture Park, I saw men made of letters, a giant spider and a gardening spade that is 23 feet tall!

Okay, I got a little side tracked when I saw the scenic waterfalls. What can I say, I like water! I’ve been told this is a very popular spot for weddings during the summer.

The real reason I came, though, is to check out the impressive facility rental space they have here. I’ve been told that all sorts of events happen here. With 17 spaces to accommodate a variety of group sizes, it’s a great place for corporate retreats, conferences and expos, and family parties. I caught a couple during my trip here.

During Spectrum Health’s Trauma Symposium, I visited a few vendors.

I also caught a glimpse of Calvin Seminary’s Appreciation Dinner. The food smelled delicious!

Did you know that all room rentals include free parking and admission for event guests? That means if you hold an event here, your attendees can enjoy the many sculpture and seasonal displays during the rental time.

It was so much fun visiting this beautiful place. There are always new things to see, so I know I’ll be back. Maybe I will plan an event during the summer when the weather is a little nicer!

Michie Explores The D!

Hello, Michie here, ready to report on my recent visit with the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau! One of the most exciting activities I took part in was the press event announcing plans for Cobo Center’s renovation. The $221-million renovation is set to include a new “signature space” in the form of a three-story glass atrium, a 40,000-square foot ballroom, a high-tech “media mesh” that will function as a giant digital signboard and more! I was most excited to see the virtual walk-through video that previews what the new Cobo will look like. Watch it HERE.

Next up was the annual hot rod extravaganza, Autorama. I could almost feel the wind on my scales as I sat in this beauty. Since Detroit is the city that put the world on wheels, you can expect to find numerous events and attractions for car lovers year-round. In fact, there are so many events; they’re collectively referred to as Autopalooza.

Outdoor activities abound in The D. I got back to nature with a speedy trip down a sledding hill at Stony Creek Metropark. There are several Metroparks throughout Southeastern Michigan that offer a variety of activities year-round. Meeting attendees will have no problem filling downtime with activities such as kiteboarding, geocaching, canoeing and more!

My next stop was the Suburban Collection Showplace (formerly known as the Rock Financial Showplace). Many public expositions are held here throughout the year ranging from Golf Shows to Wine Expos. The Diamond Center is perfect for conferences and meetings with facilities to accommodate up to 2,200 attendees.

Just north of Detroit in the Destination District of Oakland is Birmingham. In this upscale suburb’s walkable downtown I found shops, restaurants, bars, the exquisite Townsend Hotel and two movie theaters. While I settled in to watch the animated feature Gnomeo & Juliet at the Palladium, I couldn’t help but miss the days of great animations like Finding Nemo.

In nearby Troy, visitors will find the shopping mecca of Somerset Collection. I felt like a true fish out of water as I perused the luxury retailers within Somerset South, including Gucci, Louis Vuitton and others. When I crossed the glass-enclosed moving walkway to Somerset North I was greeted by the three-story atrium, which gives a bird’s eye view of the mall and fountain below. Somerset Collection is 1.44 million square feet with over 180 stores and restaurants.

I got chills up to my gills as I toured the Motown Museum! Getting up close to the artifacts from this era was thrilling. And I never imagined I’d get to go into Studio A where the Motown sound was created. You can join the likes of Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, Martha Reeves, Smokey Robinson and others by singing and dancing through Studio A when you tour the Motown Museum.

A great way to explore downtown Detroit is via the Detroit People Mover. For just 50 cents a ride this elevated transportation system offers great views of Detroit’s International Riverfront, the Windsor, Ontario, Canada skyline, and all the major landmarks in The D. During my ride I saw Comerica Park and Ford Field. Detroit is known for their winning sports teams and coming soon is Opening Day for the Detroit Tigers. This annual event becomes a street party throughout downtown as fans celebrate the return of their Tigers.

Last, but not least I headed to Greektown. This area is a nightlife mecca within The D. Flanked by Greektown Casino-Hotel; there are many restaurants and bars to choose from for an evening of fun. And if you choose to go into one of the authentic Greek restaurants, be sure to order the Saganaki, which is served with a rousing “Opa!” In addition to Greektown Casino, there are two other high-stakes gaming venues in Detroit – MotorCity Casino Hotel and MGM Grand Detroit – with luxury hotels, delectable dining, relaxing spas and flexible meeting spaces for schools of fish large and small.

Michie's MotorCity Casino Hotel Adventure

After checking in at MotorCity Casino Hotel, I had a lot of unfinished work and took advantage of the complimentary wireless internet at the work station in my room.

After hitting it big in the casino, I made my way down to D.Tour Spa for some rest and relaxation.

Anna’s magic fingers gave me gill –ty pleasure.

Feeling refreshed, I had many dining options to choose from at MotorCity Casino Hotel. First I checked out the Assembly Line Buffet. Unfortunately, I think I recognized some of the Sushi and had to pass.

I opted for Iridescence on the 16^th floor of the hotel. With a spectacular view of the Detroit’s skyline and AAA 4 Diamond rating, this great restaurant was recently voted Hour Magazine’s 2011 Restaurant of the Year.

After my great dinner I was feeling a little stuffed so I headed to the work out facility. I was a little too short in the fin to use the bike but the exercise ball worked out great.

Partying in Sound Board at the Rick Springfield concert was a hoot and I loved crowd surfing. I even got up close and personal with Rick and he promises to accept me as a friend on FB.

Once back in my room I filled up my deep soaking tub and refreshed with a cool bath.

I even ordered pillows from the pillow library to add extra comfort to my already smushy bed. What an adventure at MotorCity Casino Hotel. I will definitely be back.

Michie's Next Adventure: The Bavarian Inn Lodge in Frankenmuth

Hello, Michie the fish here reporting about my adventure to the Bavarian Inn Lodge in Frankenmuth! I swam into “Michigan’s Little Bavaria”, headed straight to the hotel to start my “staycation” and fun. There is nothing fishy about this hotel but lots to do and great hospitality. At the moment of entry I was greeted with a smile by the staff at the Front Desk. The courteous team members were gracious in helping me check-in and they filled me in on all happenings of the Bavarian Inn Lodge. I felt it was fate for me to arrive on Thursday, February 10^th as this was the EXACT date of the Lodge’s 25^th Anniversary! During my stay I had the opportunity to explore all the historic displays throughout the hotel like the through stain glass exhibit, German murals and photos around the building.

I was also happy to learn that the Lodge was celebrating Chinese New Year right now! They have all sorts of Chinese décor up throughout the Lobby and offer special activities for children each Friday and Saturday night. I thought it would be a lot of fun to participate in celebrating the year of the Rabbit, so I purchased the Chinese New Year package from my new friend Stephan at the Front Desk! Humans were wearing this as a Chinese hat but it worked very well as a chair for me.

This trip was not all about pleasure though, I had been asked to stop by the MTA conference and share my keynote presentation Creating a Vision for Your Township. The attendees could not have been nicer, and WOW what an amazing conference center the Bavarian Inn Lodge has! I think this would make a great place for my annual conference “Living in a Dysfunctional School”.

When I arrived to my suite, I couldn’t wait to jump in the whirlpool tub! Since it is Valentine’s Day weekend I phoned the Mrs. to join me as we all know Frankenmuth is a romantic place to visit. I had planned a special surprise for her that included a candlelit World Famous Chicken Dinner (yes….even Fish love Frankenmuth Chicken!) , a horse drawn carriage ride through town and a moonlit stroll over the covered bridge! But first, we enjoyed our Bavarian Inn Cranberry Wine while taking a dip and read up on the family history that our guestroom was named after. Yes, it was like having a little museum in our own room as we learned about an original Frankenmuth family and how their lineage came about.

What fish doesn’t want to have fun? The Family Fun Center was like our trip to Las Vegas… games, games, and more games. Wow, there was so much to do, where would we start. I played Deal or No Deal 10 times and won lots of tickets. After checking out the more than 100 video and arcade games, I headed over to the indoor miniature golf course to play a round. Even though I don’t have opposable thumbs, I did pretty well for my scaly self and even got a hole-in-one! Since I love the water so much, I made time to experience all 5 pools that the Bavarian Inn Lodge has to offer.

After a nice dinner, the wife and I headed over to the Lorelei Lounge for drinks and popcorn. I got the chance to meet the in-house entertainer and even join in on the tradition of singing the Schnitzelbank Song! After a bit of live music, we headed to the Ratskeller Café for Karaoke, where I sang a rousing rendition of “I’m a Little Fishy”, but I guess most people sing it, “I’m a Little Teapot”, who knew. What a great night it was.

Oh, and how could I forget the exciting new app that Frankenmuth has to offer…. gulp, gulp, gulp …. they have customized city tours that you can download right to your phone! There are tours for Family Fun Seekers, Foodies and History Buffs!

My stay at the Bavarian Inn Lodge went so swimmingly. This place is definitely a catch with all the fun and entertainment that is available. We are planning on a return trip for Bringing Back the 80s Festival in April. We can’t get enough of the 80’s Hair Bands!

Michie the Fishie Enjoys Boyne’s Three Northern Michigan Resorts

Recognized as one of the World’s Best Hotel’s, Michie arrives at The Inn at Bay Harbor and is ready to check out the Lakeside Resort. During his stay, he is happy to hear that earning Marriott Reward and Boyne Reward Points are possible for groups and vacationers alike. While checking out the upscale shopping area, he admires the snowboarder ice sculpture.

Back at the restaurant, he enjoys a glass of wine overlooking Lake Michigan.

His friends have said he can drink like a fish, but he is happy as a clam with the views that include “million dollar sunsets” and beachside group dinners.

A little swim in Lake Michigan and Michie somehow is sucked into Boyne’s snowmaking operations that blanket the two nearby resorts with powdery snow. He finds himself jumping out at Boyne Mountain through one of 100 patented Low-E Fan Guns that can pump out 132,000 gallons of water every 24 hours to make the best snow in the Midwest.

A more traditional workout finds Michie in the Solace Spa at the Mountain Grand Lodge with a mountain view.

A stop at one of Boyne Country Sports Stores allows Michie to gear up with the latest snowsports equipment before hitting the slopes.

Four Seasons of amenities include Avalanche Bay Indoor Waterpark. Recently ranked as one of America’s Top 10, it is Michigan’s largest indoor waterpark with slides and fun for all ages.

While having dinner at one of many on-site bars and restaurants, Michie wonders if he has seen this sailfish in other waters.

While checking in at Boyne Highlands Resort, Michie is greeted at the front desk. He learns there are as many four season activities as his visit to Boyne Mountain.

Catching a fin, his downhill skiing is cut short on the Highlands 54 downhill ski runs. He meets two of the friendly ski patrollers and receives a free ride down the mountain in a toboggan.

Not discouraged, Michie is hooked on Boyne’s Zipline Adventure that allows friends and family to soar above slopes and through trees at the Mountain and Highlands Resorts. From a twin zip run perfect for a group event to a full zipline guided tour with a series of stations, Michie understands why there is something for any school of fish and why Boyne says; “What are You Up For?”
